Wharf in Spate

It is no surprise to me that this has been the wettest spring ever (well since records began). I have not seen the River Wharfe higher than this since since 2015, that was exceptional, is this the new normal?

The sketch was done on one of our weekly Saturday hikes on 30th March. It’s on the river Wharfe near Appletreewick. We pass this place so often that sometimes we barely pause. But on this day the sun was out and the river high from the recent rains. The way the light falls is made dramatic by the low sun and to capture the movement of the water something of a challenge.  So this time I stopped. Just below the path one can scramble down to a small beach – most of it was underwater but I could perch on the rocks – I completed a 40-minute but quite detailed sketch zooming in on the water falls, made into fierce rapids because of the volume of water. I also took some photos.

Sketch of the River Wharfe in spate. Done on site, concentrating on the water, limited palette.
